Jesus Calls Us to Be a Light to the World

by Joanne Troppello

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” This scripture found in Matthew 5:14 is an important one to me because it’s a reminder of how I need to live my daily life as a follower of Jesus.

That reminder is crucial because I don’t live out this reminder each day as I should. When I think about my short-comings, that’s when the Holy Spirit’s gentle reminder comes—there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. What an awesome gift of grace to know there is salvation in Jesus and in Him only.

Be a Light to the World

In John 3:16 we’re told that God loved the whole world so much that He gave His one and only Son to die for our sins.

From the beginning of time once Adam and Eve disobeyed God after Lucifer, the Angel of Light, first sinned with pride—sin entered our world. God could no longer walk with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

This is why Jesus had to die. God wanted to restore the relationship between Him and everyone in the world. The only way to enter into God’s glorious Heaven when we die is to accept His gracious gift of salvation in Jesus. It’s that simple, yet so profound.

When you completely grasp the concept of the truth of God’s grace, your life on earth and eventually in the afterlife will never be the same. How glorious is that?

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) When we actually hone in on each word in this scripture passage, it’s amazing how Jesus came so that we can have life and have it more abundantly.

So, What is Abundant Life Really?

It’s the zoe life that Jesus came to give to us. It is life that comes directly from God. Having such a devotion to God for His gift of life to you.

Who is Jesus, You Ask?

He died to give us our salvation and eternal life. He is my Lord and Savior and the love of my life. He is the reason that I get up every morning to go about my day.

What is Salvation?

Salvation is the free gift of living in eternity with God in Heaven—and this is eternal life. What could be more beautiful than our God in Heaven, who loved us so much but sin separated us from Him.

My Testimony of Salvation

Credit: Edward Cisneros

When I was fourteen years old, I answered the call of what is salvation and made the decision accept the teaching in the Bible that Jesus wanted to give me zoe lifeto be living the abundant life with Him while I was here on earth but then also someday in Heaven.

Now, I grew up in a Christian home and started going to church shortly after I was born when my mom would bring me to church. When I first heard the question, what is salvation, I had no answers to it, but learned from Sunday School teachers and from my mom.

Even though I heard the teaching in the Bible, I needed to come to my own decision to accept the zoe life that Jesus was offering me—the same abundant life that He is offering to everyone…if we’d all just acknowledge our sins, ask forgiveness and ask Jesus to come into our hearts. John 3:16 does tell us the story of Jesus dying for our sins.

Another teaching in the Bible from Romans 8:28 tells us that “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

There is such peace knowing that Jesus has this zoe life intended for us. Whether it’s raining in our lives, or it’s sunny…He has a plan (Jer. 29:11-14) and He works all things out for our good. What is abundant life? That is abundant life—living each day, knowing that I am saved by God’s grace and living out the plan which He has forged for my life. His plan is one to prosper us and not to harm us…to give us a future and a hope.

If you haven’t yet accepted Jesus Christ as your savior, I would encourage you to do so. It is the most important decision you’ll ever make in your life—even more important than deciding who you’re going to marry. Who is Jesus? He is the one who wants to give you zoe life. Won’t you accept His knocking on your heart today?
