Refreshment for the Soul

by Joanne Troppello

My favorite Psalm is Psalm 23. I love how the first verse clearly defines our security in the Lord. Simply because He is our Shepherd, we will lack for nothing.

Sure, we’ll experience troubles in this world. Not everyone’s path will bring them to significant wealth. However, Philippians 4:19 shows us that the Lord will supply all our needs—not all our wants—according to His riches in glory.

Refreshment for Our Souls

The imagery depicted in verses 2-3 where God leads us to lie down in green pastures, besides the quiet waters, where He will then refresh our souls is so vivid.

I don’t know about you, but I truly need some refreshing—especially after this week. I don’t want to get too political here in a “Sunday Inspiration” column. However, as a nation, we are so divided.

For years since before Obama took office to present day with President Trump in office, there have been growing tensions in our nation. I love that our Lord is our Shepherd. He refreshes our souls.

I am praying for our nation and the world every day. I pray that we, as a nation, turn back to God and humble ourselves before Him. I pray that God would pour out His spirit and that there would be revival in our land.

The Lord refreshes our souls, so we will be ready to be guided along the paths that He has for our lives, to live our lives for His purposes and glory. Sometimes those paths may be walking in dark valleys—whether through tough times, financial issues, sickness, or dangerous times.

God Protects His People

We don’t have to fear any evil when we walk in those dark places. Like a shepherd who guards his sheep, our God protects us through those valleys. I love how verse 5 says that God prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies. It’s as if God is showing us that we don’t have to be afraid of our enemies. We can even eat the meal that God has prepared for us in front of them.

God’s Overwhelming Mercy

In verse 5, our Shepherd anoints our head with oil. In verse 6, we see that goodness and mercy follows us all the days of our lives. God is always good to us.

He has a plan for us, even if we can’t see the next step in front of us. His purposes are to strengthen us through all that we endure in life.

When we “dwell in the house of the Lord forever” I think it means to cultivate our relationship with the Lord daily through reading the Word, prayer, and praise. I am continually a work in progress in this area, but my heart does long for more of the Lord each day. I am thankful for His grace and mercy.

Psalm 23

A psalm of David

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,[a] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
