Sunday Inspiration: The Joy of the Lord
Is My Strength and Hope Each Day
by Joanne Troppello
“The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” – Russell M. Nelson
The joy of the Lord is my strength. This statement is found in Nehemiah 8:10: “…for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” This statement is true and has been true in my life since I got saved many, many years ago.
It’s possible to have joy in the Lord even when life stinks. I’m thankful that joy in the Lord is real, as is His “peace that passes all understanding.” (Phil. 4:7) Without God’s joy and peace I don’t know where I’d be in life.
Finding Joy in Difficult Times
“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, and pain – to feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but to embrace it. – Kevyn Aucoin
1. Make a Choice
It’s your choice whether or not to choose joy. You can allow your circumstances to make you bitter or make you better. Choose to become a better person through all of life’s difficulties as you decide to let joy rule your heart.
2. Enjoy Little Moments
Be open to enjoying small moments of joy. Embrace the small things in life like watching the sunrise or sunset. Enjoy spending time with family and friends. Be thankful for each blessing. As you stay open to enjoying those little moments in life, they can continually fill the well of your heart with joy.
3. Stay Creative
Try something new. Learn how to knit, paint, or take a cooking class. Do something different to step outside your comfort zone so that you can welcome new experiences into your life. Staying creative can help you to develop as an individual and improve the way you respond maturely rather than reacting immaturely to life’s circumstances and people you encounter each day.
Embrace Joy Today
“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” – Greg Anderson
That’s great advice. Embrace joy today through every aspect of your journey. Yes, it is not easy to continually embrace joy. However, when you walk daily with God, He will turn your “mourning to joy and make them rejoice rather than sorrow.” (Jeremiah 31:13)
Have you been embracing joy in your life?
