Are Rivers of Living Water Flowing Out of You?

Living Life Filled with the Power of the Holy Spirit

by J.M. Troppello

The Holy Spirit can become a powerful force of spiritual growth in your life if you yield to Him. That’s a lesson I’m still learning day by day. The following passage from John 7:37-39 showed Jesus speaking about the coming Holy Spirit. At this time that Jesus spoke, he had not been crucified and then resurrected and glorified (ascended), so the Holy Spirit wasn’t given yet. Jesus was preparing the people for the coming of the Holy Spirit – a powerful force for sanctification in their life, after they would be justified through righteousness by Jesus’s death and resurrection.

37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [a]believing in Him would receive; for the [b]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (John 7:37-39, NKJV)

The people came with palm branches and marched around the altar during each day of this feast. “A priest took a golden pitcher filled with water from the Pool of Siloam, carried it to the temple, and poured it on the altar as an offering to God. This dramatic ceremony was a memorial of the water that flowed from the rock when the Israelites traveled through the wilderness. On the last day of the feast, the people marched seven times around the altar in memory of the seven circuits around the walls of Jericho. The reference to out of his heart will flow rivers of living water, is not from one single passage of Scripture, but from general emphasis in the following verses: Deut. 18:15, Isaiah 58:11, Zech. 14:8, and Num. 24:7.” [Source: TNSB]

A small amount of water from the pitcher was poured out on the alter during each day of the feast. When the Holy Spirit is at work in your life, there will be rivers of living water flowing out of you. These rivers of living water will satisfy your thirst and flow out of your life and become a blessing to others.

Surrendering to the work of the Holy Spirit in my life, has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m still a work in progress – and have my bad days – but embracing the guidance of the Holy Spirit has been life changing.
