3 Ways to Overcome Past Mistakes

Don’t Let Your Mistakes Define You

by Veritas Vita 777

Do you let your mistakes define you? It’s not always easy to overcome your past mistakes—especially if you really messed up. I’ve made some big mistakes in my life. It’s been hard to move past some of them. However, I have found that not letting my mistakes define me has positively impacted my life. If you need help moving forward, consider the following ways to overcome your past mistakes.

“Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.” – Bruce Lee

1. Understanding

The first step is to give yourself some understanding. You’re going to mess up. That’s part of life. No one is perfect. If you want to move forward in your life and continue on your journey of self-discovery, you need to become more understanding of your wins and losses in life. Embracing who you are can help you become more successful in both your personal and professional life.

2. Forgiveness

It’s important to forgive yourself when you make mistakes. Forgiving yourself can help you move forward and not stay stagnated in regrets.

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” – Lewis B. Smedes

I love this quote from Lewis B. Smedes. It’s likely he’s referencing forgiving someone else who hurt you, and that you’ll be free once you forgive them. However, I think it applies to this situation as well. If you can’t forgive yourself when you make mistakes, you won’t be free to move on from that mistake and try to accomplish better things in your life.

3. Progression

The final step is to keep moving forward. Don’t allow your mistakes to define you and disrupt your life. You are more than the mistakes you made. Choose to look at your mistakes as a chance to learn from them. Begin to see them as part of your life’s journey. Don’t let the mistakes you’ve made in the past rule your present or future. Take this time to encourage your inner critic to let go of the errors from the past and move forward to good things to come in your future. There will likely continue to be times in your future when your inner critic will come out again. It’s good to listen to that voice but take the good and leave the bad. Don’t dwell on the negativity of those mistakes, but rather learn from them and move on to bigger and better things.

Don’t Let Your Mistakes Define You

“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” – Oscar Wilde

You don’t have to let your mistakes define you. It’s your choice whether you allow those things to define your future. Remember the following three steps to help you overcome your past mistakes. Choose to offer yourself understanding and grace throughout this journey of life. Forgive yourself when you mess up and move on. You’re never going to be perfect, but you need to keep moving forward in life.
