5 Quotes from Jordan B. Peterson that Inspired Me

Changing Your Perspective Can Change Your Life

by Veritas Vita 777

I love to be inspired each day. I find that inspiration in many things like my faith in God, the beauty of nature, and the words of inspirational people like clinical psychologist, Jordan B. Peterson. The following five quotes from Peterson have inspired me in my journey of personal discovery. I hope they can inspire you as well in your own journey to get to know yourself better.

1. Behavior

“You can only find out what you actually believe (rather than what you think you believe) by watching how you act. You simply don’t know what you believe, before that. You are too complex to understand yourself.” – Jordan B. Peterson

Your behavior and thoughts and beliefs are closely linked. I agree with Peterson that the way you act will show you what you believe. You can confess various beliefs and opinions. However, if you’re not acting them out in your life, do you really believe them? That’s one of the reasons why I value self-reflection. It’s vital to know who you are and truly understand what you believe in life. That can change your behavior in a more positive direction.

2. Vision

“Don’t underestimate the power of vision and direction. These are irresistible forces, able to transform what might appear to be unconquerable obstacles into traversable pathways and expanding opportunities.” – Jordan B. Peterson

Maintaining a hopeful vision for your future is imperative if you want to thrive in your life rather than simply surviving. I agree with Peterson that there is great power in vision and direction – and you should never underestimate them. When you cultivate a detailed vision for your life, you can overcome obstacles that come your way.

3. Gratitude

“There’s some real utility in gratitude.” – Jordan B. Peterson

Thankfulness is a beautiful thing. If you don’t cultivate gratitude in your life, that can generate more negativity. A negative mindset won’t help you succeed and achieve your goals. Becoming a more grateful person can radically change your life. Sure, being thankful won’t automatically change your circumstances. However, it will enhance your mindset so that you can focus on the positive things in your life and not get stuck in all the negativity. Then you can increase your productivity level and find ways to manage the problems more efficiently that you have.

4. Development

“Strengthen the individual. Start with yourself. Take care with yourself. Define who you are. Refine your personality. Choose your destination and articulate your being. As the great nineteenth century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche so brilliantly noted, ‘He whose life has a why can bear almost any how.’” – Jordan B. Peterson

Embarking on a journey of personal growth is never a waste of time. There is great reward in learning who you are, why you behave the way you do, and understanding your strengths and weaknesses. I love the word choice that Peterson uses with refine your personality. He’s not saying that you need to change who you are and everything about yourself. However, he is saying that true personal growth occurs when you enhance your strengths and accept and then strengthen your weakness—as you refine your unique self.

5. Direction

“You must determine where you are going in your life, because you cannot get there unless you move in that direction. Random wandering will not move you forward. It will instead disappoint and frustrate you and make you anxious and unhappy and hard to get along with (and then resentful, and then vengeful, and then worse).” – Jordan B. Peterson

Sometimes you need to step back and reevaluate where you are in life. Maybe you are exactly where you want to be. You might not be as far as you’d hoped in accomplishing your goals. If you want to move forward in life, identify where you want to go. I love how direct Peterson is – random wandering will not move you forward. Without a clear direction on where you want to go, you will be disappointed and frustrated.

Inspire Yourself Today!

Find something or someone who inspires you to become your best self. Again, my faith in God is the most important factor that inspires personal growth in my life each day. Seek out that inspiration that can help to move your life forward to your own beautiful journey of personal growth and development.
