Are You a Procrastinator?

What the Bible Says About Procrastination

by Veritas Vita 777

Are you a procrastinator? Generally, I’m not one given to procrastination. However, there are some things that I do procrastinate on doing. My taxes as a freelance contractor are a bit more complicated than working for an employer as a salaried worker or permanent staff member. I definitely procrastinate when it comes to getting my taxes done. But I always get them in to the IRS on time. Although, I wish I’d give myself more time to get them done so I don’t go crazy last minute.

“Procrastination is like a credit card: it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.” – Christopher Parker

I can definitely relate to that statement from Christopher Parker. Procrastination might be fun while you push things off to the backburner. But, when you need to get them done, you usually have limited time – and that can make you frustrated!

What the Bible Says About Procrastination

The word procrastination is not used specifically in the Bible. However, there are many references to it and how you should be doing the opposite of procrastinating—and being a good steward of your time.

“Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” – Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield

That’s a great message from Philip Stanhope. I completely agree that it’s so important to truly value time. Life is short. It’s vital that you prioritize the right things in life so that you can accomplish the most things – of value. Idleness and laziness are mentioned in the Bible. They play a big role in causing you to procrastinate.

“I’d be more frightened by not using whatever abilities I’d been given. I’d be more frightened by procrastination and laziness.” – Denzel Washington

Fear can also be a cause of procrastination in your life. That’s a great message from Denzel Washington. He fears procrastination more than actually moving forward through fear and using his abilities for good.

1. Diligence is Better Than Laziness

24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor. (Proverbs 12:24, NKJV)

I love the book of Proverbs. There is so much wisdom that you can garner from this book. However, if you want to reap the benefits of what you read in this book, you need to put those verses into practice in your life. I’m still a work in progress in this area as well. But, I generally choose diligence over laziness. Actually, I need to learn to relax more. Usually, if I’m not busy working or doing something at home like cooking, cleaning, etc. I feel like I’m not being a good steward of my time. So, laziness isn’t usually a problem for me. I just need to find a balance and learn how to relax more.

2. Don’t Miss Your Opportunity

4 He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap. (Ecc. 11:4, NKJV)

Being cautious is good. However, sometimes too much caution can cause you to procrastinate. This verse says that if you focus too much on waiting for the ideal conditions, you could lose out on reaping any crop at all.

3. Hard Work Pays Off

23 In all labor there is profit, But [a]idle chatter leads only to poverty. (Proverbs 14:23, NKJV)

Procrastination doesn’t lead to success. If you want to succeed, you need to work hard. Participating in idle chatter won’t lead to succeeding in life.

4. Don’t Give in to Idleness

13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. (I Timothy 5:13, NKJV)

It’s easy to become idle and allow that to cause you to procrastinate in your life. Idleness can lead to worse things like being a gossip or busybody.
