Are You Abiding in Jesus?

Bearing Fruit in Your Spiritual Life

by Veritas Vita 777

I’ve read this passage from John 15:1-8 many times. Yet, rereading it today, truly resonated with me in a new way. It made me ask myself the question am I abiding in Jesus?

I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [a]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you[b] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. (John 15:1-8, NKJV)

There is a process for fruit to grow. It doesn’t happen overnight. The same is true with the believer’s life. Producing fruit in your life happens over time. However, you will produce more fruit the more you abide in Christ. You do this through obedience (See: John 15:10, I John 3:24). Both of those verses pertain to this passage in John 15:1-8. When you keep the commandments of Jesus, you abide in His love. Jesus said in v. 10 that He keeps His Father’s commandments and abides in His love. I John 3:24 shows that we know that He abides in us by the Spirit He has given us.

Again, it’s important to state that you do not get to Heaven through works. It’s through faith in Jesus Christ and His death on the cross. However, these passages stated here pertain to daily growth in your spiritual walk – and producing fruit for God – as you apply His commands in your life and live out the truths of the Bible.

I love the reminder from John 15:5 that Jesus is the vine and believers are the branches. When believers abide in Jesus, they will bear much fruit. The best part is the reminder that without Me (Jesus) you can do nothing. That is something to mediate on. I certainly have found that to be so true in my own life.
