Do You Take God at His Word – Even in Dark Times?

Cultivating a Heart of Worship and a God-Focused Mindset

by Veritas Vita 777

“We must take God’s Word, even in the dark.” – Robert Murray M’Cheyne

It’s easy to trust God in the good times. Trusting Him when things are tough is more difficult. However, God never changes. He is faithful all the time. For me, it’s been a journey of learning how to cultivate the right mindset.

  • I can’t move mountains on my own and that’s okay.

  • God is the one who moves the mountains in my life.

  • I need to focus on God and not my problems.

Of course, cultivating the right mindset took work and discipline. Several factors helped me nurture that God-focused mindset.

  • Internalizing Scripture verses related to the need

  • Asking friends and family for prayer support

  • Committing to daily Bible reading and prayer

  • Developing a strong heart of worship

Putting the Blinders On

Blinkers, sometimes known as blinders, are a piece of horse tack that prevent the horse from seeing to the rear and, in some cases, to the side.” Having blinders on, is an idiom that means that someone is oblivious to what is going on around them.

Now, I’m not suggesting that you walk around through life ignoring reality and pretending that everything is perfect. That’s lunacy. Instead, I’m referring to putting the blinders on to help you cultivate that God-focused mindset in your life.

When you pray and ask God to help you with a problem, you need to leave that problem in His capable hands. Don’t get worried an hour later and try to ‘take the problem back’ because He hasn’t answered you immediately or you think you can handle the problem better.

Putting the blinders on means that you acknowledge the facts, but you choose to lay those at God’s feet and praise Him while you wait.

Yes, I know that is not easy! It’s really difficult to do.

Yet, I’ve learned that when I’ve put on those blinders, I can actually breathe again. I’m not living in a constant state of fear and anxiety. I have peace that passes all understanding like Paul states in Phil. 4:6.

3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, For in Yah, the Lord, is [a]everlasting strength. (Isaiah 26:3-4, NKJV)

If you need help trusting God and taking Him at His Word – even in and especially in the dark times – read over this passage from Isaiah 26:3-4 several times. Read it until you can fully internalize it and comprehend the message.

Whose mind is kept in perfect peace?

The person whose mind is stayed on God is kept in perfect peace. This person trusts in God. This person knows that God is their everlasting strength. You can have that perfect peace in your life as well when you put those blinders on and keep trusting in God.
