When You’re Afraid, Do You Turn to God?

Trusting that God is with You All the Time

by Veritas Vita 777

Have you ever been stagnated by fear? I have. It’s no picnic. Fear can make you do things you wouldn’t ordinarily do. When you’re in panic mode, you tend to make bad decisions. At least, that’s what happens when I allow fear to rule my life.

“When I am frightened, He is there to comfort and sustain me. His words give wisdom to my ear, and peace will always claim me.” – Jessie A. Lee

I have learned that with God at the center of my life, I don’t have to give fear a place of prominence.

17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love [a]Him because He first loved us. (I John 4:17-19, NKJV)

This passage from I John 4:17-19 has always been an encouragement to me, especially when I’m walking in fear. If you’ve been struggling with fear in your life, memorize this passage, or at least memorize verse 18. There is no fear in love. The perfect love of God has cast out fear. As a believer, you no longer have to live in fear of judgment. God’s love has overcome that through the death of His Son.

Another one of my favorite passages to read and recite when I’m afraid is found in Isaiah 41:10.

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ (Isaiah 41:10, NKJV)

You don’t have to fear because God is with you. You don’t have to be dismayed because He is your God.

  • God will strengthen you.

  • God will help you.

  • God will uphold you.

Yes, when fear is palpable in your life, it can be difficult to fight against it. However, you are not alone. Trust and know that God is with you. He already knows all that you’ll be going through before you are in each of those situations.

In this passage from Isaiah, the Lord was commanding the Israelites not to fear. God brought the Israelites out of Egypt (See: Ex. 15:6). The phrase my righteous right hand denotes God’s sovereignty and power over all that work in opposition against Him. You can see in Isaiah 40:10 that God will come with a strong hand and His arm shall rule for Him.

If you are fearful today, take some time to meditate before God. Share all of your feelings with Him. Then read His Word – especially those verses that deal with the topic of fear – and start walking in faith as He guides your path.
